Poor Isis

My mom's dog Isis had to go in for 3 stitches yesterday. :P

I came over to my Mom's and my brother ran outside yelling "Kenzie! Hurry! Mom needs your help!" I went inside and my Mom was very upset and her Papillon Isis's left hock was covered in blood. She had been grooming her and while she was trimming the hair on the back of Isis's leg I guess she kicked backwards on the scissors as they were closing and they nicked a hole in the top of her hock. Since the skin is so tight around there the laceration quickly expanded leaving a wide open wound.

I had arrived ironically just in time, but unfortunately not soon enough to stop my Mom from panicking and stuffing it with quick stop powder in an attempt to stop the bleeding. I picked her up and washed as much as I could off and trimmed the hair around the area (I didn't know how deep it was before that time). When I was finally able to see it though I knew that there was no avoiding a vet visit. So I told my Mom to get her car keys while I grabbed a compression pad from the first aid kit and began to squeeze Isis's poor little leg. Luckily I was able to get the bleeding to stop long before we got to the vet.

It was of course a Sunday so none of the vets near us were open and we had to take her to an expensive emergency vet. She's worth every penny though. She got 3 stitches and has to wear a cone for the next 14 days though. We're just glad her Achilles didn't get nicked. It was only a few millimeters off and that would have been a major surgery and most likely permanent damage which for this bouncing maniac wouldn't have been fun (she seriously just sits there and jumps, and jumps, and jumps like a Jack Russel Terrier).

I think my poor Mom was traumatized far more by the experience than Isis was. Isis didn't even whimper or blink an eye through the entire ordeal but my Mom has now vowed never to groom Isis or her other two Papillons herself again. We've been grooming them ourselves for around 8 years now so this was totally a freak accident. Isis has also always been a hard case even though my Mom spent a ton of time handling her as a pup for show. At least a groomer visit will be much cheaper though and if they nick them they can pay the $400 vet bill!

I'm a Biomedical Engineering Undergrad now but I know that, that is what I want to / am meant to do. I think I have saved all of our animals from cats to dogs to rats at least once in their lives and quite a few of my friends animals as well. I have always loved animals and have wanted to be a vet since I was 5 and as you all have seen from my art that love for animals still rings true. Hopefully I'll be able to apply to vet school in the next year or two I think I'm about 1/3 - 1/2 the way through with my Pre-Veterinary requirements at this point.

What about you guys? What is your dream career and will you pursue it?

I don't have any picture of Isis on her but I do have an animation I made of her playing ball back in 2010. She still loves to play ball for hours so we are very glad that no major damage was done.

Poor baby! I totally know how you feel. Both of my dogs died within 1 year and 2 days of each other. I miss them dearly. But my career that I've wanted to be since I can remember is a vet. I think it started with my two dogs. They were sisters. And Maltese and very cute and awesome.
